The Paphos Darts Association has great pride in announcing the very first CDF sanctioned Paphos Open. The event is self funding so the more people enter the greater the prizemoney will be. Paphos Darts Association Trials Playoffs.
Following the withdrawal of Andreas Antoniou from the National Trial in Limassol a playoff was held at the Olympus Bar in Tala on Sunday 8th of January where Duncan Fell qualified to take Andreas' place. Good luck to all our players in the National trials.
Paphos Darts Association Trials.
Please be aware that while we have tried to make every effort to include as many of our member as possible it has become such a headache to include the players that registered their interest after the closing date of the 26th of November. Therefore the committee has decided to stand by the original and final closing date for entrants. As, at the time there were only eight names registered there will not be a need for a playoff. The committe hopes that all players will understand the reason behind this decision as the date for the first National trial is nearly upon us and getting all the payers together seems to be impossibe. The players that were registered by the November 26th deadline were: Paul Deacon, James Deacon, Roger Bloxham, Dave Brown (Olympus), Andreas Antoniou, Lambros Makrides, Steve Claxton and Lee Sanderson.
Record Smashed During 24 Hour Charity Darts Marathon.
The owner of the Olympus Bar in Tala, Paul Deacon, with the help of some of the players from the Paphos Darts Association took part in a 24 hour darts marathon in aid of the Kathryn Hadjipetrou Leukemia appeal. The event held over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of December is hoped to have raised over €850 through sponsorship & donations. The final figure is still unknown as donations are still coming in.
The players were split into two teams of eight each competing against the clock and each other to break the current record for the number of times around the board on doubles in twelve hours. The present mark was 89 times. Both teams of players playing in two hour shifts managed to go beyond this mark with the team made up of mainly Olympus Bar players & regulars consisting of Paul Deacon, Carl Wood, Dave Brown, Roger Bloxham, Dave Rees, James Deacon, Kenny Watts & Alex Elia reaching a mark of 95 times around. Going better than that was the Alex’s Bar Exiles made up of Steve Claxton, Peter Philpott, Joe Pintye, Sid File, Ian Oates, Andreas Antoniou (Riccos), Duncan Fell & Peter Westmorland who managed a magnificent 101 times around the board in the same twelve hour period. At the end of the twenty four hours a total of 179 circuits of the board had been completed. The highest number of doubles by any player for their shifts in the first twelve hours was hit by Steve Claxton who managed 472 doubles in six hours. Roger Bloxham, who never seemed off the board, managed an incredible 852 doubles during the twenty four hours. The darts was a triumph for all taking part, breaking the twelve hour record and creating a new twenty four hour record. Steve Claxton was also unlucky not to break the longest bullseye record failing by 3 inches to beat the existing mark of sixteen feet and four inches.
At half past two on Sunday when Roger Bloxham hit the last Bulleye to complete the 179th circuit a packed bar congratulated all the players. The afternoon then continued with entertainment by vocalist Andi Hobbs who got the place rocking while everyone ate a delicious lunch prepared by Paul’s wife, Yvonne. Paul was delighted with the effort made by the players and the generosity of the kind people who through sponsorship or donations had helped to swell the coffers for such a good cause. A big thank goes to all the mains sponsors of the event including Draintech who made a large contribution through sponsoring Ian Oates.
Updates for Both Divisioins
The Tables and the Stats have been updated for both divisions.
Decembers Top Tip!
This months top tip was sent in by Lee Sanderson from the Alexs Bar in Peyia:
Lee says "At this time of year it's important that your car is well maintained and you keep an eye on all the little things that help your car run in good condition. Making sure you keep your oil, water etc topped up is essential and don't forget to keep an eye on your brake fluid and always top up with the correct stuff!.
Secretary - Thanks Lee, great advice.
24 Hour Charity Darts Marathon
Paul Deacon, with the help of the Association will be holding a 24 hour darts marathon in aid of the Kathryn Hadjipetrou Leukemia Appeal. Kathryn is a 16 year old girl who has been struck down with this terrible ailment and is currently having treatment in Nicosia. A friend of the Hadjipetrou family, Paul has decided to raise as much money as possible and it is hoped that all our members will help in any way possible. The event will be held over the weekend of the 10th/11th of December at his Olympus bar in Tala. There will be two teams of Association players competing against each other and the clock to unofficially break the work record for the most 'round the clock' on doubles in 12 hours which is over 80 times! as well as trying to beat the longest bull thrown which is over 16 feet! There will be other events which will hopefully keep the place buzzing and people awake. The darts will start at 2 pm on the 10th and will finish at 2pm (funnily enough!) on the 11th. If anyone or anyone knows an individual or a company can give some sponsorship money or an item that can be auctioned off please contact Paul on 99740854 or the Association by the usual methods.
Malta Open 2011
Once again our Association was represented abroad in this years competition in Bugibba, Malta. The Association ladies faired better than the men with Wendy Oates losing at the last 16 stage and Amanda Sanderson going one better losing at the last 8 stage to the eventual winner. In the Mens competition it was a tale of Paphos 2 - Germany 2! due to the very large field, each board had a number of preliminary rounds. Steve Claxton & Ian oates won their preliminary matches. Paphos 1 - Germany 0. In the first round Ian Oates, Peter Philpott & Lee Sanderson were all beaten. Lee falling to the very good English player, now playing for Germany, Colin Rice. Paphos 1 - Germany 1. On his way to winning his board final Steve Claxton managed to dispatch another player from the German contingent. Paphos 2 - Germany 1. Steve then ran into the very impressive Colin Rice, who returned the status quo by dispatching the player from Peyia. Paphos 2 - Germany 2. After his Defeat Steve said "I don't mind losing to Colin, he's a great player & anyone that gets invited by Phil Taylor to take the German team to play in a PDC event deserves all the respect they can get".
Once again the Malta Darts Federation should be applauded for the organisation & running of their annual open which is growing every year. We shall be going back next year.
Novembers Top Tip!
This months top tip was sent in by Steve Claxton from the Alexs Bar in Peyia:
Steve says "I would not reccommend walking into a revolving door with your hands in your pockets, if the door stops you could hit your face on the door when it stops".
Secretary - Thanks Steve, we're sure our members will take your advice.

Med Cup 2011
Paphos Darts Association ladies once again flew the flag of Cyprus in the annual meeting of the darting nations from around the Mediterranean. Amanda Sanderson & Karen Mattews produced some good darts in the ladies pairs event to book themselves a place in the final only to lose to the very good French pair of Dorothee Lemaire & Carole Frison by 4 legs to 2. Due to the passing away of his Mother, Demetris Georghiou & his wife Alexis were unable to take part in this years competition which meant that Wendy Oates was excluded from the team event but was allowed to participate in the ladies singles. Unfortunatelty Wendy was drawn against the Turkish player Duygu Karaca and although Wendy outscored her opponent, she was unable to finish and eventually lost. Amanda & Karen also had early exits from the ladies singles competition. But all the Paphos ladies played some good darts over the whole competition.
Ian Oates, the Associations mens representative had possibly the worse 3 days of darts in his life! He couldn't buy a treble or double. Although he started very well beating the eventaul mens singles champion & Greek national champion, it was all down hill from there & has gone to live in a cave somewhere in the Troodos with his shame.
The Malta Darts Federation should be congratulated with the way there organisation handled the competition from start to finish. The committee & there team of 28 dedicated chalkers should be applauded. The bagpipe & drum band at the closing ceremony were something else & a huge surprise too all who attended. Something for the Scots to appreciate. Karens dancing (she keeps it quiet but she's a sweaty!!!) was superb accompanyment. Next years competition will be held in either Turkey or Greece. The competition is growing in stature every year and now regularly attracts the attendance of the President of the WDF, Mr. Roy Price who commented at the closing ceremony that the WDF will continue to endorse the event. Hopefully the Paphos Association can continue to have members represent their National team. Roll on next year. Photos of the excellent event can be found here
Our thoughts go to Dimitris his wife & family with the passing of his Mother.
