The 2010 Season Finals and Presentation Night

A packed Cockatoos on the evening of the 8th of May saw the curtain fall on our second successful season. The venue was full or players and supporters from our association as well as a great deal of interest from holiday makers who, on passing, had seen the event taking place and came in to watch some great darts. The night opened with a short speech from our President, Mr. Tony Newbon, in his new Cyprus Darts Association blazer! He thanked all those who have helped with the running of the league and all the players who have participated throughout the season. Our National team representatives, Amanda Sanderson, Lorraine McCormack & Mick Saggs were also congratulated on qualifying for this year.

The first final was to decide the team knockout competition. The match between Alex’s Bar & the First & Last was always going to be close & was proven in the final score of 13-11 to Alex’s Bar who managed to complete a league and cup double. The match included some great darts by both sides & 180s from Ian Butler & Peter Philpott. Eventually the team from Peyia managed the 13 legs needed to secure victory with only 1 leg to spare.

After a delicious free buffet provided by some of the ladies from the association who donated the cost of the food and their time to prepare it, the doubles competition began. Again, this was a very close match. The Cockatoos Spartans pair of Will Kneale & Tony Newbon found themselves in a lead of 4 legs to 2 but only needing 1 elusive leg proved too difficult in the best of 9 match. Carl Wood and Paul Deacon took the last 3 legs to win the match 5-4 after a nail-biting final leg decider.

The singles was a little more one-sided. Having narrowly missed out in the doubles final, Will Kneale managed to go one better and win the singles title over Billy Markham. Initially both players kept pace with each other but ultimately the Cockatoos Spartans player proved too consistent for the First & Last player eventually winning the match 5-2.

The raffle was the next item of the evening with prizes generously donated by Ian Oates, Peter Philpott, Andreas Antoniou, Tony Newbon, Steve Claxton and Lambros from Cockatoos.

To bring the evening to a close, the prizes were awarded for this seasons victors & runners-up as follows:
2010 League Winners – Alex’s Bar
2010 League Runners-up – Cockatoo Spartans
2010 Team Knockout Winners – Alex’s Bar
2010 Team Knockout Runners-up – The First & Last

2010 Singles Runner-up – Billy Markham (First & Last)
2010 Doubles Winners – Carl Wood & Paul Deacon (Mesogi Arms)
2010 Doubles Runners-up – Tony Newbon & Will Kneale (Cockatoos Spartans)

In the Semi-final Billy also took out Phil Harper in a nail-biting 4-3 win. Will put in a solid performance beating Andreas Antoniou & Amanda Sanderson to get to the final. Poor Attendances Hit The Cyprus International Open.

Very low attendances were the main talking point at the Cyprus International Open over the weekend of the 17th & 18th of April. The doubles, which was held on Saturday was only attended by 16 pairs of competitors. After a very late start due to waiting for players to arrive, the Paphos pairings of Ian Oates/Andreas Antoniou, Constandinos Constantinides/Andros Sofokleous & Lee & Amanda Sanderson all suffered 1st round exits in what was a disappointing day. The only highlight for the players from Paphos was that our President, Tony Newbon, managed to get to the semi-final being ably assisted by C.D.F. President, Michalakis Savvides. The eventual winners were David Swerovski & Emilios Theocarides from Larnaca beat Demetris Georgiou & Evros Themistocleous in the final. For the second year in a row the Ladies competition has suffered due to low attendances. Following last year disappointment when the prize-money was withdrawn at the last minute & the cancellation of the ladies competition completely this year, there was only a mens singles event. The final was an all Limassol affair with Demetris Georgiou beating Loukas Themistocleous to be crowned champion. Paphos players Mick Saggs & Lambros Markidis reached their board finals but got beat at the last 16 stage but Steve Claxton managed one position higher finishing joint 5th. C.D.F President in his addresses to the players on both days, encouraged a need for greater participation from the members across the island as turnout for both days was very low & disappointing.

Paphos Darts Association League Doubles Knockout Results

After an evening of some very good darts which included 180s by Phil Harper & Pete Philpott & a 109 outshot from Ian Butler, we now have our finalists. Paul Deacon & Carl Wood from the Mesogi Arms & Will Kneale & Tony Newbon from Cockatoos Spartans. They will play off over the best of 9 legs in the final to be held on Finals Night. A full list of the results can be found here.

Alexs' Bar Clinch the League Title, just!

Despite losing in their last match 13-12 away to the Cockatoos Spartans on the evening of the 7th of April, the players from Alexs' Bar in Peyia managed to win the 12 legs they needed going into the last match to secure the 2010 season league title. Congratulations go to the team Captain Amanda Sanderson & her team on winning the competition. They now have a chance to emulate last years performance by the First & Last by trying to complete a league & cup double.

The First Amathusia Open

Club 71 owners Leo & Sylvia were excellent hosts for the first Amathusia Limassol District Darts Association Open held on the weekend of the 27th & 28th of March. The Venue which is always known as friendly & welcoming had re-arranged their bar to accommodate 8 boards on the playing floor with ample space for spectators. The two day tournament was split into the doubles competition on the Saturday, with the singles on the Sunday.
The Association was represented by only two sets of doubles. Andros Sofokleous & Constantinos Constantinides from Cockatoos Olympians with Andreas Antoniou & Ian Oates representing the Cockatoos Spartans. The Olympians pairing played some great darts all day but were unlucky to lose to the eventual winners in the semi-final. Andreas & Ian lost in the final (after some fireworks!!!!!!) 6-3.
Good luck & bad luck was the story of the singles on the Sunday. Good luck on the part of Lamdbros Makridis who found himself on the receiving end of byes in the first two rounds due to no shows & bad luck on the part of Craig Theaker who was drawn in the first round against the well known, excellent player Dimitris Georgio from the Limassol Association. Unfortunately there were early round exits for Ian Oates who lost 3-2 to Kyriakos Orphanides from Nicosia who got his revenge for the Paphos player knocking him out of the National trials, Andros Sofokleous, Craig Theaker & Constantinos Constantinides. Lambros Makridis, having won through to the board final then had to play Steve Claxton. The Alexs' bar player proved too strong & progressed to the semi-final with Lambros finishing a very commendable joint 5th place for which he received a trophy & €50. Steve won the very close semi-final match against a very slippery opponent in the shape of Loukas Themistocleous. Steve Booked his place in the final by beating Loukas in the deciding leg 5-4. Unfortunately Steve failed to win in the final against the very good David Szwerovski (apologies for the spelling Dave).

2010 Season Week 9

The results have been added for week 9 & the stats and league table updated. Alexs' Bar are still holding on to their first place standing by only 3 points over the Spartans going into the last fixture of the league season. The First & last were narrowly beaten 12-13 by the Mesogi Arms. The Athenians lost to the Spartans 21-4 & the Olympians lost by a similar score to Alexs' Bar The Cockatoos Spartans stay in second place but have now cut Alexs lead to only 3 points. The other match saw the Mesogi Arms beat Cockatoos Athenians 21 - 4. There were no 180s this week. There were no high out-shots this week either. The final match between the Cockatoos Spartans and Alexs' bar will decide the league winners. Alexs' bar only need 12 legs to be crowned champions.

2010 Season Week 8

The results have been added for week 8 & the stats and league table updated. Alex Bar have maintained their first place standing by comprehensively beating The First & Last by 18 legs to 7. The Cockatoos Spartans stay in second place but have now cut Alexs lead to only 3 points. The other match saw the Mesogi Arms beat Cockatoos Athenians 21 - 4. There were 180s this week from Russell Adey (Mesogi Arms), Costantinos Constantinides (Olympians) & Phil Harper (First & Last). 100% (5 wins out of 5 games) this week for Peter Philpott (Alex Bar), Andreas Antoniou & Will Kneale (both Spartans) & Paul Deacon (Mesogi Arms). There were high out-shots this week by Amanda Sanderson 102 & 125, Steve Claxton 120 & Lee Sanderson 115 all from Alexs Bar.

The results have been added for week 7 & the stats and league table updated. Alex Bar have reclaimed 1st place with a  comprehensive 20 to 5 win over the Athenians at Cockatoos. The First & Last keep their title challenge alive by demolishing the Olympians by a margin of 23 to 3 at the First & Last. In a very close fought match at the Mesogi Arms, the home team won by the narrowest of margins, 13 to 12 over the Spartans. There were no 180s this week, not one!!!! 100% (5 wins out of 5 games) this week for new ladies Cyprus #1 Amanda Sanderson (Alex Bar), Ian Butler, Mike Mondeo and  new Cyprus national player Mick Saggs (all First & Last). This will be the first year that teams from Paphos have been able to take part in these national competitions & wish them all the very best of luck & straight darts.

The Final Qualification for the Cyprus National Team Trials

Mick Saggs has once again confirmed his status as one of the best darts players in Cyprus by qualifying for the National team for the second year running. The First & Last owner & player produced some great darts to win the 4 matches needed to see him through after narrowly not having to play a 3-way playoff due to Ian Oates winning the last game of the day. Ian Oates failed to qualify after not finding any form on the day.  The Ladies team in Cyprus is still dominated by the Paphos Ladies Amanda Sanderson & Lorraine McCormack. Amanda was unbeaten on the day with Lorraine only losing to Amanda. The two ladies will make up the Cyprus National Ladies Team. The Mens Cyprus National Team for 2010 are: Demetris Georgiou (ALDDA), Loucas Themistocleous (ALDDA), Marios Demetriou (NDA) and Mick Saggs (PDA). We would like to congratulate our Paphos players that made it to the national teams & commiserate with the players that didn't. Our best wishes go to the Cyprus team for the Mediterranean Cup in Gibraltar from the 19th - 23rd of May.

2010 Season Week 6

The results have been added for week 6 & the stats and league table updated. Cockatoos Spartans continued their good run of form with another win over The First & Last. The Mesogi Arms reversed the result from their first meeting against Alexs Bar.  The Cockatoos Olympians Beat the Cockatoos Athenians in a close game. 180s this week by Andreas Antoniou he managed 2 on Friday evening. 100% (5 wins out of 5 games) this week for Andreas Antoniou (Cockatoos Spartans), Paul Deacon, (Mesogi Arms) and Zinos Christodolou (Cockatoos Olympians). Entries for all competitions over the weekend must be in by the 14th of April.

The Second Round of the Cyprus National Team Trials

Once again it was back to the Lodge Pub in Larnaca for the second round matches of the national team trials. Mick Saggs was placed in the 'group of death' with current & past international players. Mick, the current Cyprus number 1 was in no mood to relinquish his place in the national team & got off to the best possible start winning 4 of his first 5 matches. His wins included a comprehensive victory over a current international player, Demitris Georgiou. Ian Oates, although in a slightly easier group struggled to find his form (polite way of putting it!) & was extremely lucky to be involved in a 3-way play-off for the 2 remaining places up for grabs after Christos Christou & Roger Bloxham had already qualified. Chris was in impressive form for the day winning 7 matches out of 7. Ian managed (scraped more like!) to win both his matches in the playoff & thus progressed to the last stage of the competition. The last 8 players are: Christos Christou (ALDDA), Demetris Georgiou (ALDDA), Loucas Themistocleous (ALDDA), Roger Bloxham (ALDDA), Marios Demetriou (NDA), Alin Patru (NDA), Mick Saggs (PDA) and Ian Oates (PDA). The national team will be selected from the results of the next round. The Lodge Pub is on the beach front on the Dhekelia Road in Larnaca.

Peter Philpott & Sid File and Lambros Markidis & Panios Avraam were all defeated in the second round (board finals). The winners of the mens doubles were Andreas Laos & Steve Claxton.
Singles - There were first round exits for Sid File and Panicos Avraam in the mens & Karen Matthews in the ladies. Peter Philpot got to the last 32 stage & there were losing board final positions (last 16) for Lee Sanderson, Peter Roblin, Allen Matthews and Lambros Makridis. Steve Claxton reached the quarter-final stage before getting beaten by the eventual losing finalist. The ladies title was taken once again by Amanda Sanderson who dominated all her matches including the final.

The whole weekend was a resounding success with some great darts in an exceptional, even if very expensive, venue. There is a short highlights video that includes the final legs in the Mens Doubles final & the Ladies Singles final below. Please be aware that if you are easily offended by scenes of drunken people dancing around with a cup full of Steve's special "cocktail", please do not watch this video!

General Update

Special Paphos Darts Association Evening - Cancelled

The proposed promotional evening scheduled to be held on the 5th of March has now been cancelled. The promoters, Leon Beer, Would like to visit as many pubs in our league as possible on that evening. Because of this reversal, the fixtures will be as originally published at the start of the season with the exception that the home fixture for the Spartans against the First & Last will now be played at the First & Last instead of Cockatoos. The Knock-out competition dates remain the same as originally published. Apologies for the slight inconvenience.

Disappointing Paphos Turnout and Results in the Cyprus National Team Trials

Congratulations go to Mick Saggs & Ian Oates who have progressed to the last 16 stage of the trials. Following 2 last minute no shows by Kevin Ward & Vangelis Hadjistefanou, the Paphos team only had 6 players but acquitted themselves well during the day. Andreas Antoniou & Mike Mondeo, playing on possibly the toughest board of the day were unlucky not to finish in the qualifying Positions. Ian & Mick Qualified on the same board after both players dropped 2 matches each. Willem Oostram had the worst possible start losing his first 3 matches but came back well to finish the day with a couple of wins. The final player from Paphos was Zinos Christodolou who was unfortunate to lose in a play-off on his board. This was a great achievement for the Cockatoos Olympians player who hasn't been playing darts for very long. Mick & Ian will be playing in the next round, again at the Lodge Pub on the 28th of February. Photographs are available from here.

2010 Season Week 5

The results have been added for week 5 & the stats and league table updated. After their defeat at the hands of the Cockatoos Spartans, The First & Last have now slipped into third position. Top spot is now occupied by Alexs Bar but only by 1 point over the Spartans. 180s this week by Ian Butler, Mick Saggs & Willem Oostram, all for the First & Last. 100% (5 wins out of 5 games) this week for Ian Oates (Cockatoos Spartans), Steve Claxton, (Alex Bar) and George Georgiou(Cockatoos Olympians). There were no high out-shots this week.

Special Paphos Darts Association Evening

On the evening of the 5th of March 2010 the Association will be holding a special evening with our sponsors, Leon Beer & in the company of the President of the Cyprus Darts Federation, Michael Savvides.

The evening will be attended by the Leon promotional team who will be handing out complimentary promotional products as well as a quantity of free beer for our thirsty players. We shall hold a darts competition on the evening as well as a raffle to raise some funds for the Association. The cost of drinks will be, as always, some of the cheapest in Paphos & we shall be providing a free buffet for the evening.

It is really important that we present our Association to our main sponsors in the best possible way so a good turn-out by as many players as possible is required.

This unscheduled evening will obviously affect the league fixtures & knockout fixtures. Please see the new fixture list which has been adjusted to allow for what should be a great evening to take place. Could all the captains please print copies of the league & knockout fixtures & distribute to their players.

If you have any queries about the evening please contact Tony or Ian on the usual telephone numbers.

2010 Season Week 4

The results have been added for week 4 & the stats and league table updated. The First & Last have moved into first position with a narrow 1 point lead over Alex Bar. 180s this week by Andreas Antoniou for the Cockatoos Spartans, Mike Mondeo for the first & Last and 3 for the Alex Bar players Allen Matthews, Amanda Sanderson & Steve Claxton. The only high out-shot of the week was a 106 by Steve Claxton for Alex Bar although Kevin Ward for Cockatoos Athenians could not have got closer with a 99 finish. 100% (5 wins out of 5 games) this week for Steve Claxton, Amanda Sanderson (both Alex Bar) and Paul Deacon (Mesogi Arms). Steve Claxton's evening also included a 13 dart leg.

To all Members

Due to recent events and the formation and actions of the newly formed Pancyprian Darts Federation, the following statement has been issued by the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Darts Federation.

There have been many issues over the past year which have caused the Committee to make this decision to distance itself from the Pancyprian Darts Federation.

The Paphos Darts Association committee would like to reiterate its full support for the President and the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Darts Federation.

Paphos Representatives for the Cyprus National Team Trials

1st Cockatoos Open - Famagusta Players Take the Spoils

The first Cockatoos open held on the 7th of February was well attended by over 30 players from all over the island. The eventual winner was Sotiris Flokkas from Famagusta who beat Nectarios Motis, also from Famagusta, in the final to collect the €400 first prize & a trophy. As runner up, Motis collected €200 and a trophy. 3rd was Louis Mouzourides, again from Famagusta, winning €100 and a trophy and 4th was Ermos Korradou from Limassol who received €50 and a trophy. Organiser of the event and manager at Cockatoos, Lambros Markidis was pleased with the way the day went commenting that he had had some very good comments from the players including a comment that it had been the best run tournament they had ever played in Cyprus. Lambros is planning to organise more tournaments following the success of the first one and believes now that people know how the event was run, they know the money is as advertised and guaranteed and he believes the next one will be even better. Please check back regularly for more updates.

2010 Season Week 3

The results have now been added for week 3 & the stats and league table updated. Cockatoos Spartans have taken over 1st position followed by First & Last. Only one 180 this week by Costas Constantinides for the Cockatoos Olympians. We waited three weeks for a high finish & then we get four at once. 100 From Evros Efraim (Spartans), 109 & 114 From Will Kneale (Spartans again) & staring defeat in the face against Willem Oostram, Steve Claxton (Alexs Bar) hit a very commendable (if desperate!) 144. 100% (5 wins out of 5 games) this week for Ian Oates, Will Kneale (Spartans), Paul Deacon & Russel Adey (Mesogi Arms). Dave Harris (First & Last) was also 100% for this Fridays match but only played 4 games.

Paphos will be sending 8 Men & 4 Ladies to the first round of the national trials this year.

The mens trials will be held over 3 Sundays: 21/02/10, 28/02/10 & 07/03/10

We shall be holding our own trial for league players wishing to take part in the national trials on 11/02/2010 at Cockatoos. The pub will be open from 5pm & the darts will start at 7pm sharp. It will be a round-robin competition to determine the players that will go to the trials.

Could the team captains please email a list of players that are interested in playing at Cockatoos to the association no later than 04/02/2010 so the order of play can be arranged.

All players taking part in the national trials must be prepared to travel abroad to take part in the Mediterranean Cup if they are successful in getting in the national team. The Med Cup is being held in Gibraltar this year.

We would like to continue the success of last year when we had 4 Paphos players representing Cyprus. All the players involved, Amanda Sanderson, Lorraine McCormack, Mick Saggs & Tiny Croxford all thought the whole experience was great.

Date for entries has now been extended until the 8th of February
