The Tony Wingate Memorial Darts Competition

The players at Magic bowling in Polis are holding a competition this weekend in the memory of Tony, details & contact numbers are below. It would be great if we could send up a few teams from the association & make it a special day in memory of a special person.

Finals Night & Presentations

As our first season has now come to a close, the finals night was held at Cockatoos. Steve Claxton & his Timbertech crew did an excellent job of constructing a stunning stage for this and future darts events to be held at the venue. The new venue for the Paphos Darts Association received a good response from both players & spectators.

The darts started with the final of the team knockout which saw The First & Last win comfortably over Bandanas B by 13 to 4. Following a delicious buffet the doubles were won by The First & Last pairing of Mick Saggs & Phil Harper over Paul Deacon & Charles Turrall. Paul produced the performance of the evening with some great darts which included three 180s but unfortunately Mick & Phil were eventual winners by 5-3. The singles final was taken by Steve Claxton who inflicted a 5-2 defeat to Riccos. The first four legs were shared evenly then Steve took the next three to re-confirm him as one of the best players in Paphos. The winners & runners-up photos can be found here.

Following the raffle which raised 100 Euros with prizes donated by the committee & friends, and the presentation of the trophies, association President Tony Newbon closed the evening by praising our international representatives, Amanda Sanderson, Lorraine McCormack & Mick Saggs on their performances overseas & commented that next year he hoped we could not only reproduce the achievement but increase the number of Paphos Darts Association members playing at international level. Tony then continued with a list of people to thank. Our Generous sponsors Steve Claxton from Timbertech, Carl Wood from Paphos Property Maintenance & Lee Sanderson from Labco Marine for their continuing support. For the Venue he thanked Jimmy & commented that this is only the start of darts at the venue & that he is looking forward to playing there for a long time. Dad Prosser from MacLynes was thanked for his great work for doing the engraving of the trophies on the night. Wendy Oates, Amanda Sanderson & Janette Newbon were thanked for their hard work in providing the delicious buffet. In closing Tony thanked everyone for coming including our friends from the Pafos Darts League & that he was excited about the future of darts in Paphos.

Team Knockout Second Semi-final

Bandanas B managed a very close 13-11 win over the Mesogi Arms B & will now meet the First & Last in the final.

Polis Player & True Gentleman Tony Wingate

It is with great regret that the committee must report on the tragic loss of Polis dart player & gentleman, Tony Wingate aged 45. Tony was instrumetal in helping to set up & indeed helped to build the very impressive dart room at Magic Bowling in Polis.  He was always full of life & would do anything for anyone. He will be greatly missed by his dart playing mates, his relatives in Paphos & anyone that knew him. Our thoughts are with his wife Sue at this time.

More Support From Local Business

Carl Wood, dart player & Paphos businessman has very generously continued his support for the association. More information about the work Carl does can be found on his website. Many thanks from the association for his generosity. Anyone wishing to help with sponsorship in any way can contact the committee by using our email address or phoning.

Cyprus Darts Federation Gala Dinner

The evening of the 14th of March 2009 saw the Cyprus Darts Federation hold their gala dinner at the Nicosia Country club at Latsia, Nicosia. The event was well attended by the darts associations from all over the island with the guests of honour including the General Secretary of the Cyprus Olympic & the representative from the main sponsor, Leon.

Prizes were awarded through out the evening for all the winners of the national competitions held in the 2008 season. Although Paphos didn't feature in any of the competitions there were trophies presented to Paphos Association members for their participation in the mens & ladies national teams. Lorraine McCormack was awarded for her position in the ladies national team while Steve Claxton who finished in the 'B' national side & number 1 ranked Tony 'Bandana' Croxford received their own individual rewards.

A special contribution to darts award was given to the Paphos Darts Association President, Tony Newbon for his efforts over the last 3 years which has culminated in the creation of an association in Paphos.

Go to the photographs from the evening.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Thank you to all ladies and gents who took part in The International Trials on Sunday, for the way in which you conducted yourselves, your appearance and, of course, the way you played.

Keep up the good work to enhance our reputation all over the Island.  All the results can be found on the CDF website.
I have received a call from the CDF President advising that if we have a 30 people, including guests, for the Gala Dinner then they will reduce the price to E15 per person.  With the offer of paying for half the cost of a coach this is tremendous value.

Remember the ticket price includes all you can eat and drink and guests are more than welcome!
I have researched the cost of a coach/minibus and the price varies but the transfer should be approximately 10 to 20 Euros per person depending upon numbers.
For those who wish to make their own way and stay in a hotel.  We have access to 3 hotels all CTO inspected.  One star  50Euros per room B&B approximately 2-5 K away. Two star  60 Euros per room B&B and the Europa Hotel  (highly recommended) 4 stars 95 Euros  both close to the city centre.
A reminder to return sold raffle tickets asap BEFORE SATURDAY for the draw held Saturday night.
It is very important that we all make an effort to support Federation events.
If you are attending the above event or have any queries please contact Ian Oates or myself.

Paphos Darts Association players steal the show at Ayia Napa.

Report on the 3rd Famagusta open held at the Panthea Holiday Village in Ayia Napa on 21-22 of February 2009.

The 2 day event started in the evening of Saturday 21st of February with the qualifying rounds of the mens & ladies doubles competitions. At the end of the evening it had been a good session for the Paphos Darts Association players with the mens pairing of Charles Turrell & 15 year old Billy Markham qualifying for the final. Their female counterparts, Amanda Sanderson & Wendy Oates had also qualified for the ladies pairs final both of which were to be played on the stage the following day.

Proceedings restarted at lunchtime on the 22nd of February. The team spirit within the Paphos Darts Association camp was sky high after the day before & there was a great feeling of expectation that the Paphos Association players would do well. The draws were carried out & luckily enough there were not too many clashes between Paphos players with only Andreas Andoniou & Lee Sanderson on the same board & Ian Oates & Charles Turrell drawn against each other. The ladies draw fortunately kept Paphos Association players Amanda Sanderson & Wendy Oates at opposite ends of the draw.

Wendy Oates & Amanda Sanderson both played very well in the ladies singles competition with Amanda eventually qualifying for the final which she won at a canter 3-0. The win included a 16 dart leg, the lowest in the stage matches. Paphos Association player Amanda is rapidly becoming the most dangerous player on the island in the ladies game having been triumphant in the last 2 open events without losing a leg.

The closing stages of the mens singles competition was littered with Paphos Association players. Charles Turrell & current Cyprus number 1 ranked player, Tony Bandana Croxford were both unlucky to lose their respective board finals to finish joint 9th. Having won their board finals Peter Roblin & Steve Claxton were drawn together in a quarterfinal clash that was won by Steve Claxton 3 legs to 1. The other Paphos Association player to qualify for the quarterfinals was Lee Sanderson who was unfortunately beaten at the hands of Michalis Theodorou in a nail biting narrow 3 to 2 defeat.

The first semi final match was an all Cypriot clash between George Trypinotis from the Famagusta Association 4 against Marios Myrianthous from the Limassol Darts Association with the Famagusta player taking the tie in a close fought 4 legs to 3 win. The second semi final saw Paphos Darts Association player Steve Claxton beating Michalis Theodorou 4 legs to 2 in a match where the Paphos player threw some excellent darts & never looked like he was going to lose.

In the final, Steve Claxton dominated the match from the start & was crowned champion after defeating George Trypinotis by 5 legs to 3 George, the Famagusta player put up good resistance but the Paphos Darts Association player proved too strong & resilient.

Paphos Darts Association players that had reached the pairs finals on the previous day also acquitted themselves very well in the respective finals. The mens pairing of Charles Turrell & Billy Markham were unfortunately beaten by the very strong pair of Andreas Laos & Ermos Korradou by 5 legs to 0 even though the final match score did not reflect how close the game was. In the ladies pairs final Paphos Darts Association players Amanda Sanderson & Wendy Oates triumphed over the English pair of Anne Rose & Wendy Ryman in a very close 3 legs to 2 win.

The whole weekend was seen as a resounding success for the men & ladies of the Paphos Darts Association almost managing to win every winners trophy on offer. Although not at the event, Paphos Darts Association President, Tony Newbon was delighted with the performance of the newly accepted association & team Captain Tony Bandana Croxford commented that he believes that Paphos has the best squad on the island. He added we have players, good players from the age of 15 who are pushing to get a place in the Paphos team, we are aiming to become the best town on the island & are looking forward to the continuing growth of darts on the island of Cyprus

As a footnote the Famagusta Darts Association must be thanked & congratulated on another well organised & run tournament. Every player from the Paphos Darts Association went away from the event with only positive memories. Ian Oates, Secretary of the Paphos Darts Association, Commented that he had learnt a lot from the competition & that it can only go to aid the Paphos Association when they organise their own official open tournament later in the year.

Please check back soon for photographs of the event.

Re: - Cyprus international Dart Team and Gala Dinner

To all old and new members of the Paphos Darts Association.
Any player, male or female, who wishes to represent Cyprus in the upcoming Internationals are invited to forward their names to either the Secretary, Ian Oates or the president, Tony Newbon.

Two stipulations, which I would draw to your attention, are a residency in this Country of at least two years and, you must be prepared to travel outside this Country (Cyprus Darts Federation sponsorship).

We are allowed to send 16 men and ladies for the International Trials. If more than this number wish to go we will hold a selection competition here in Paphos.

I would also like to draw your attention to the Gala Dinner and awards, which will be held at the Nicosia Country Club. Names please to Ian or Tony.

The Paphos Darts Association is looking into alternative accommodation at a better rate for our members. Any coach travel, arranged by the Association, will be sponsored 50% by the Cyprus Darts Association. Several of our members attended this function last year and we had a brilliant time.

Tony Newbon
President, Paphos Darts Association

After a brief presentation to the first man of darts, Stelios Elinas, the match got underway in front of a packed Bandanas 180 Bar with Paphos taking the first two games of pairs with wins from Carl Wood & Charles Turrell followed by Steve Claxton & Billy Markham. The Limassol players stormed back to win the next two matches, inflicting loses on Bandana & Ian Oates & Andreas Riccos & Evros Efraim. The final match in the pairs was won by the Paphos players, Lorraine McCormack & Tony Newbon.

After a short break for some wonderful food the match resumed. The Limassol player Loukas Themistokleos dominated the first game including a magnificent 134 out-shot to inflict the first loss in the singles against Charles Turrell. Lorraine McCormack again produced a great performance to win the next game against Fitos Eleftheriou. With the match score at a very tense 4-3 to the hosts, next came the best game of the evening. Both players repeatedly hit some great scores including the first 180 of the evening by the Limassol player, Chris Christophou & a 16 dart leg from the Paphos player Ian Oates. The game was eventually taken by the Paphos player 2-1. Subsequent wins for Paphos by Bandana against Panikos Avraam, Steve Claxton against Dimitris Dimitriou who scored the only other 180 of the evening & Carl Wood against Chris Ktori put the match score beyond doubt but 3 loses in the next 3 games for Andreas Riccos against Chris Dimitriou, Evros Efraim against Dimitris Georgiou & a very impressive performance from Billy Markham against Selicas made the score look a little more respectable for the visitors. The final game of the match was won by the very excitable Tony Newbon whose walk-on is something to be seen against Fitos. The final match score was 9-6 to the home team.

There was a short presentation ceremony in which trophies were presented to the losing Limassol captain & the winning Paphos captain. Speaking to the Limassol captain, Chris Ktori & his players after the match it was agreed that these matches are very important for building friendships & increasing the quality of the players as well as great entertainment for the spectators who flock to watch the darts. Paphos captain, Bandana added that the Paphos team are getting stronger & stronger & even though they were missing players due to illness they have a big enough squad of quality player to still be able to produce an impressive win over their local rivals. In closing he wished to thank all the Limassol players & supporters for coming & he is looking forward to the next meeting.
